Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa is an entirely indoor aquarium two minutes' walk from Shinagawa Station, housed in the Shinagawa Prince Hotel complex. It holds around 20,000 marine creatures across 350 species, but what sets it apart is the presentation itself — sound, projection and lighting are woven through the displays as much as the tanks, creating something closer to an immersive installation than a conventional aquarium.
The Jellyfish Rumble is the signature draw: a mirrored chamber where lighting cycles slowly through colours while jellyfish drift overhead in what feels weightless. The dolphin stadium is circular with 360-degree seating and illuminated water curtains; the first four rows are genuinely the splash zone. Between the main exhibits you'll find touch pools, tropical fish displays, five themed zones including an interactive section called Magical Ground, and something genuinely unusual for an aquarium — a carousel with aquatic animals.
Displays shift between day and night versions, and many are themed around Japan's four seasons. Most areas work year-round, though hours vary by season and special events, so it is worth checking ahead. Photography is allowed throughout.
The park suits families, couples and friends, and the fully indoor setting means weather is irrelevant. A visit typically takes two to three hours. Note that attractions and some paid programmes cost extra on top of admission, and you cannot use rides without an entry ticket. Advance web tickets let you skip the ticket counter. If you are staying at the Shinagawa Prince or its partner hotels, present your room key at the ticket centre for a discount. Same-day re-entry is unlimited, so you can leave and come back.

Standard hours are 10:00–20:00 with last entry at 19:00, but these vary by season and special events; check aqua-park.jp before visiting. Attractions cost extra beyond admission. Advance web tickets skip the queue. Shops and restaurants inside keep different hours from the aquarium. The station is served by JR Shinkansen, Yamanote, Keihin-Tōhoku and Keikyu lines. Plan two to three hours and check the show schedule on arrival to time your visit well.
