What it's like here

Thermae Bath Spa is Britain's only place to bathe in natural thermal spring water, fed by the same geothermal source the Romans exploited nearly two thousand years ago. Opened in 2006 in the heart of Bath, it sits where the historic Cross Bath and Hetling Pump Room once stood, wrapped in a contemporary building of glass and Bath stone. The water emerges at 46°C and is cooled to comfortable bathing temperature, so you can stay in for hours without the water cooling beneath you.

The spa centres on two main pools. Downstairs, the Minerva Bath curves beneath a low vault; upstairs, the rooftop pool is open to the sky, where you float with views across the abbey and Georgian terraces, steam rising in the evening air. Between them lies a wellness suite of four themed steam rooms, an infrared room and an ice chamber. Most visitors book a two-hour session (the standard Thermae Welcome), though four-hour and full-day options exist; twilight sessions starting at 17:00 are particularly popular.

The water itself carries 43 minerals from Bath's geothermal source. Beyond the pools, Watsu (a floating water therapy treatment) is the signature offering, and the Springs Café & Restaurant sits within the complex—time spent eating is added back to your session, a practical touch that encourages you to linger. The place welcomes solo visitors, couples and friends, and is wheelchair accessible with level floors, lifts and ramps throughout the main building, though electric wheelchairs cannot enter the poolside or wellness suite areas.

Adult-only rules apply: the main spa admits those 16 and over, while the separate Cross Bath (the original thermal spring) accepts accompanied children aged 12–16. Walk-in sessions happen daily alongside pre-booked slots, but both fill quickly—arriving early or booking in advance is advisable, especially in summer when treatments can be reserved weeks ahead. The site opens daily from 09:00 to 21:30, with the pools and wellness suite closing at 21:00.

It reads as a place for deliberate relaxation rather than a leisure complex. You are there to soak, perhaps move between the themed rooms, eat unhurried, and watch the light change. The rooftop pool particularly rewards an evening visit, and the whole experience benefits from an unhurried approach. This is not a destination for swimming laps or crowds; it suits anyone seeking genuine thermal bathing in a historic city setting.
